Health and safety

Governance

Who is accountable for safety at each level, and how we monitor and escalate safety performance.

Where accountability sits

Safety accountability follows line management. We do not delegate it to a safety advisory role, which advises, monitors and audits but does not hold the accountability for the work being done safely. The person who controls the resources, the schedule and the method is the person accountable for the exposure that method creates.

Level
Accountability
Board of Directors
Establishes our expectations on health and safety as part of its duty of supervision, and considers material safety matters within strategy and risk oversight.
Executive management
Approves the health and safety requirements, allocates the resources they require, and reviews performance and audit findings on the cycle stated in the governing policy.
Assigned safety responsibility
Responsibility for the health, safety and emergency management arrangements, for training and for monitoring compliance is assigned within the Group and named in the governing policy, and carries the authority to stop work.
Site management
Responsible for implementing safety practices at the site, for emergency preparedness and for supporting incident investigations.
Supervisors
Responsible for the safety of the work under their direction, for verifying that controls are in place before work starts, and for stopping work where they are not.
Employees
Must follow safety procedures, report hazards and incidents without delay, and take part in training and emergency drills.
Contractors
Must comply with our standards, complete site-specific training and report safety concerns.

Stop-work authority

Any person may stop work that they believe to be unsafe, and we do not disadvantage anyone for doing so. The authority is not conditional on being right. We record every stop-work and assess the matter, and work resumes only when the exposure has been controlled or the assessment establishes that the concern was mistaken.

Key facts

Accountability

Safety accountability follows line management, not a safety advisory role.

Stop-work authority

Any person may stop unsafe work, and the authority is not conditional on being right.

Escalation

We escalate potential-fatality events to executive management immediately and report them to the board.

Independent authority

Any person may stop work they believe to be unsafe, and no one is disadvantaged for doing so.

Monitoring

Responsibility for collecting, analysing and reporting safety performance information is assigned within the Group and named in the governing policy. We monitor completion of safety training across business units, the emergency drills conducted at each site and the findings drawn from them, the containment, investigation and closure of safety events, and the recording of near misses, unsafe conditions and corrective actions.

We conduct site inspections and internal audits on a defined cycle to assess compliance and verify that corrective actions have been completed. We build health and safety risk assessment into operational planning, procurement and project design.

Escalation

We escalate immediately to executive management, and report to the board, any incident that results in or had the potential to result in a fatality or a permanent injury. We notify the competent Peruvian and Swiss authorities where the applicable law requires it, within the period that law prescribes. We escalate systemic or unresolved issues to executive management and, where appropriate, to the competent authorities.

Review

We review our health and safety arrangements on the cycle stated in the governing policy, and again after a significant incident or a change in regulation. Where a review changes a requirement, we record the change and the reason for it and communicate both to the sites affected.

Where an activity generates them, safety performance statistics are published. We conduct and record the monitoring described above so that the information is prepared on a consistent basis.

Raising a concern

Employees, suppliers, communities and any other party may raise a concern through the confidential reporting channels. We provide for anonymous reporting, and we do not tolerate retaliation against anyone who raises a concern in good faith.
