Passenger train winding through the Peruvian highlands

History

Xstreco draws on a documented history of resource development, mining and mineral processing associated with Compania Minera Atalaya S.A., followed by the staged reactivation of mineral assets in Peru.

Our origins

A resource-sector tradition renewed through a modern operating group. Xstreco was co-founded by descendants of those associated with the establishment and development of Compania Minera Atalaya S.A., a Peruvian mining enterprise with experience in underground extraction, mineral processing and asset development.

Beginning in 2016, a new phase of activity was initiated to reassess and progressively reactivate mineral assets connected with this wider mining history. Xstreco emerged as the group through which we now organise and advance that work. We are an independent company. Our connection to Atalaya lies in the operating knowledge, asset history and resource-sector experience carried forward by our founders.

In brief

First mineral rights

1948, over the Atalaya concession

Reactivation began

2016, on a staged, asset-by-asset basis

Portfolio today

Five mining assets held in Peru

Early foundations

The origins of the Atalaya mining enterprise were formed during an important period in the development of Peru's energy and mineral-resource sectors.

Peru's energy sector

In 1948, during the presidency of Jose Luis Bustamante y Rivero, the future founder of Compania Minera Atalaya S.A. played a central role in the establishment of Empresa Petrolera Fiscal, the state enterprise that preceded Petroperu.

The Atalaya concession

In the same year, mineral rights were secured over the 120-hectare Atalaya concession. Exploration and development programmes subsequently expanded the technical understanding of the mineralised area.

National resource development

In 1960, while serving as Director of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, the future Atalaya founder negotiated an agreement between the Peruvian government and the British Petroleum Company.

Foundations in Peru's resource sector

The early Atalaya history combined public-sector experience, mineral-rights development and practical involvement in the expansion of Peru's energy and mining industries.

Historical milestones

Selected milestones in the development of Compania Minera Atalaya S.A. and the later reactivation of associated mineral assets.

1948

Empresa Petrolera Fiscal

The future founder of Compania Minera Atalaya S.A. contributed to the establishment of Empresa Petrolera Fiscal, now Petroperu, during a formative period in Peru's state resource sector.

1948

Atalaya mineral rights

Mineral rights were secured over the 120-hectare Atalaya concession, establishing the basis for subsequent exploration, mine development and processing activities.

1960

British Petroleum agreement

While serving within the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, the future Atalaya founder negotiated an agreement between the Peruvian government and the British Petroleum Company.

1970

Compania Minera Atalaya S.A.

Compania Minera Atalaya S.A. was formally established, consolidating the mineral rights and mining interests developed during the preceding decades.

1971

Processing capacity expanded

With financing from Banco Minero del Peru and reinvestment in the operation, Atalaya expanded its mineral-processing capacity.

1974

Geophysical assessment

Induced-polarisation work was undertaken around the underground operation, supporting the assessment of additional mineralised targets.

1979

Mining modernisation

The operation began introducing trackless mining methods, including ramps and low-profile diesel loading and haulage equipment.

1981

Further plant expansion

Processing capacity was increased further, supporting continued production and operating development.

Later

Portfolio divestments

Through a series of strategic transactions, Atalaya-related interests in Tintaya, Antapaccay and Coroccohuayco were transferred to Xstrata and subsequently became part of Glencore.

2016

Asset reactivation programme

A new phase of activity began with the progressive reassessment and reactivation of four mineral assets: Antioquia, Churubamba, Cochabamba and Rumichaca. Exploration and technical programmes were initiated on a staged, asset-by-asset basis, with individual work programmes advancing and completing at different times according to the requirements and maturity of each asset.

2019

Formation of Xstreco

Xstreco began to take shape as the structure through which we would coordinate our renewed mining and processing activities.

2022

Operational activities commenced

We progressively began formal activities during 2022 and 2023, focusing on reactivating the existing asset portfolio, consolidating technical information and preparing the mines for further development.

2024

Tincopalca acquired

We expanded our portfolio with the acquisition of the Tincopalca mine, adding a further mineral asset to our Peruvian activities.

2024+

Staged technical advancement

Technical, geological and geophysical programmes continued across the portfolio, with work undertaken progressively according to the development priorities of each asset.

Today

An integrated mining and processing group

We bring together five mining assets and associated processing activities within an independent group structure focused on disciplined development and operating control.
